Skiing at Ben Lomond
Despite Tasmania being located in southern latitudes, well south of the major mainland ski fields, our mountains are of modest elevation, we have no main range, and our small size means Tasmania's mountain country is prone to the warming effects of the various seas and oceans that surround us. This results in ski seasons of largely unpredictable quality and duration.
Nevertheless, we're an island of eternal optimists, and feel priveledged to be able to enjoy our favourite winter recreation within the confines of one of the State's wonderful National Parks.
Ben Lomond is 45 minutes from Launceston, and a three hour drive from Hobart. The carrying of snow chains is mandatory for any vehicle negotiating 'Jacob's Ladder' to the plateau, but skiiers can park their cars below and hop on the ski shuttle for a stress-free ride to the ski area. It's essential for both comfort and safety that visitors have warm protective clothing available in case the weather deteriorates.
While downhill skiing is the most popular of the winter sports on offer, there is also ample terrain for extended days of cross-country skiing, and a snowboarder's terrain park has recently been added to the facilities.
The ski precinct offers several T-bar and poma lifts, ski and board hire, a day lodge, and the 'Creek Inn', where replete skiiers can unwind over a beer and a tall story or two.
